Waiting for LR to load previews is a bit of a pain in the butt. #PHOTO MECHANIC 5 LIGHTROOM HOW TO#I guess someday I should learn how to properly use LR. I bought ACDsee for $30 as it was much faster than Bridge. Within the past couple weeks I downloaded the trials for PM and ACDsee. That doesn't help me distinguish between fine differences. #PHOTO MECHANIC 5 LIGHTROOM FULL#All too often Bridge will take a second or even many seconds to load images at full resolution. In particular, I like to be able to look at images at 100% while bouncing between different shots to pick out the sharpest. I've found the performance of Adobe Bridge to be lacking. Thanks to all for your thoughts and comments, especially Ian for detailing his workflow! Very helpful! I like using it quite a bit, but agree that using LR alone would be my preference, if it were quicker to do so. I use Faststone Image Viewer to review/compare/delete images before import to LR. Not a pro, and don't shoot many high volume events, but agree that LR (for me) is not the best tool for initial image review. Total processed images per match varies between 70-120. I use PM to move only those I tagged to a subfolder labeled 'picks' which I then import to LR using the 'add' option. I use PM to select the ones I want, it automatically adds all the exit/iptc data upon ingest. Approx 600-700 shots a match and under deadline at the half & end. No question regarding the speed of PM vs LR for the culling process. Adobe simply chooses to ignore these concerns. But it should be completely unnecessary to have to rely upon a two-solution workflow to meet such a simple need. I like PM, have used it for a very long time. I did this in Aperture 3 (even much faster than PM) quite easily but had to abandon it when Apple ceased development.Īlas, Adobe thinks they know better, which forces it's users to seek an additional $150 investment to address the situation. Users could then download/import the remaining images after deadline when they have more time available. allow the option to only import 'tagged' (or locked) photos so that users wouldn't have to go through the painstaking process of importing every image from the card, only to get to the relatively few you may need for deadline. If Adobe and the Lightroom team really cared about users who worked on critical deadlines, they would have addressed the request many of us have been making since the very early days of Lr development. Waiting around for LR to build thousands of 1:1 previews just for culling is a waste to me. I'm doing 80-100 larger image sets a year so PM is a given for me. If you are only doing a few larger image sets a year then perhaps PM is overkill. You won't have time to wait around for LR to build 1:1's. If you are shooting on deadline for those games then PM is what you want. įor 4-5 large shoots per year the extra expense of PM seems a little over the top to me If you stay within the Library mode and have 1:1 previews built there is no lag between images as LR doesn't have to do anything on the fly. Īgain the rejects are moved to the reject folder. I will also give a rating before I flag as pick. Īfter I'm done I move all the rejects to a reject folder and then clear the pick flags from the rest and will then go thru again for a 2nd pass. but on the first pass I don't normally pixel peep. if I want to zoom to 1:1 hitting the space bar does that. as LR is showing only unflagged it automatically goes onto the next image. Hit F to goto full screen and then on each image I hit either P (pick) or X (reject). Get LR to build 1:1 previews and go make myself a cup of Tea (don't drink coffee ) Import into LR using the ADD option (this stops LR transferring images to a folder which its not very fast at)Īlso at this point I add any global keywords but used correctly LR can be a fast and efficient culling tool. I can see the need (or want) of PM if you constantly have large shoots to cull. Regardless, you should be happy with either in contrast to PS. PM seems to operate with 70% less overhead and is apparently much faster for the initial cull than LR.ĭisclaimer: I've never used PM but intend to take a look - and my 70% number is totally made up, but it's probably not far off for those who have used PM. PM to cull then over to Lightroom for organizing What are your thoughts and recommendations? Thanks in advance! I shoot 4-5 college BCS games per year and I am not happy using Adobe Bridge CC and Photoshop CC. I am looking for a way to organize and process files quickly and efficiently.
